easter 3: thursday evening

Psalm 37.22-42

For those blessed by the Lord shall inherit the land,

   but those cursed by him shall be cut off.

Our steps are made firm by the Lord,

   when he delights in our way;

though we stumble, we shall not fall headlong,

   for the Lord holds us by the hand.

I have been young, and now am old,

   yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken

   or their children begging bread.

They are ever giving liberally and lending,

   and their children become a blessing.

Depart from evil, and do good;

   so you shall abide for ever.

For the Lord loves justice;

   he will not forsake his faithful ones.

The righteous shall be kept safe for ever,

   but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.

The righteous shall inherit the land,

   and live in it for ever.

The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,

   and their tongues speak justice.

The law of their God is in their hearts;

   their steps do not slip.

The wicked watch for the righteous,

   and seek to kill them.

The Lord will not abandon them to their power,

   or let them be condemned when they are brought to trial.

Wait for the Lord, and keep to his way,

   and he will exalt you to inherit the land;

   you will look on the destruction of the wicked.

I have seen the wicked oppressing,

   and towering like a cedar of Lebanon.

Again I passed by, and they were no more;

   though I sought them, they could not be found.

Mark the blameless, and behold the upright,

   for there is posterity for the peaceable.

But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;

   the posterity of the wicked shall be cut off.

The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;

   he is their refuge in the time of trouble.

The Lord helps them and rescues them;

   he rescues them from the wicked, and saves them,

   because they take refuge in him.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

Take a deep breath and allow the Psalm to remain with you for the evening.

the prayers

Spend time with God praying in your own words or with no words at all.

Almighty God, heavenly Father, you have blessed us with the joy and care of children: Give us calm strength and patient wisdom as we bring them up, that we may teach them to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

easter 3: thursday noon

meditation

By calling us [Christ] has cut us off from all immediacy with the things of this world. He wants to be the center, through him alone all things shall come to pass. He stands between us and God, and for that very reason he stands between us and all other men and things. He is the Mediator, not only between God and man, but between man and man, between man and reality. || Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

easter 3: thursday morning

Alleluia! Christ is risen.

The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3.1

a reading from the epistles of st. paul

Colossians 1.24-2.7 I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. I became its servant according to God’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil and struggle with all the energy that he powerfully inspires within me.

 For I want you to know how much I am struggling for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for all who have not seen me face to face. I want their hearts to be encouraged and united in love, so that they may have all the riches of assured understanding and have the knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I am saying this so that no one may deceive you with plausible arguments. For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, and I rejoice to see your morale and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

easter 3: wednesday evening

Psalm 38

A Psalm of David, for the memorial offering.

O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger,

   or discipline me in your wrath.

For your arrows have sunk into me,

   and your hand has come down on me.

There is no soundness in my flesh

   because of your indignation;

there is no health in my bones

   because of my sin.

For my iniquities have gone over my head;

   they weigh like a burden too heavy for me.

My wounds grow foul and fester

   because of my foolishness;

I am utterly bowed down and prostrate;

   all day long I go around mourning.

For my loins are filled with burning,

   and there is no soundness in my flesh.

I am utterly spent and crushed;

   I groan because of the tumult of my heart.

O Lord, all my longing is known to you;

   my sighing is not hidden from you.

My heart throbs, my strength fails me;

   as for the light of my eyes-it also has gone from me.

My friends and companions stand aloof from my affliction,

   and my neighbours stand far off.

Those who seek my life lay their snares;

   those who seek to hurt me speak of ruin,

   and meditate treachery all day long.

But I am like the deaf, I do not hear;

   like the mute, who cannot speak.

Truly, I am like one who does not hear,

   and in whose mouth is no retort.

But it is for you, O Lord, that I wait;

   it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.

For I pray, ‘Only do not let them rejoice over me,

   those who boast against me when my foot slips.’

For I am ready to fall,

   and my pain is ever with me.

I confess my iniquity;

   I am sorry for my sin.

Those who are my foes without cause are mighty,

   and many are those who hate me wrongfully.

Those who render me evil for good

   are my adversaries because I follow after good.

Do not forsake me, O Lord;

   O my God, do not be far from me;

make haste to help me,

   O Lord, my salvation.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

Take a deep breath and allow the Psalm to remain with you for the evening.

easter 3: wednesday noon

meditation

Jesus: “Discipleship is not limited to what you can comprehend—it must transcend all comprehension. Plunge into the deep waters beyond your own comprehension, and I will help you to to comprehend even as I do. Bewilderment is the true comprehension. Not to know where you are going is the true knowledge. My comprehension transcends yours. Thus Abraham went forth from his father and not knowing whither he went. He trusted himself to my knowledge, and cared not for his own, and thus he took the right road and came to his journey’s end. Behold, that is the way of the cross. You cannot find it yourself, so you must let me lead you as though you were a blind man. Wherefore it is not you, no man, no living creature, but I myself, who instruct you by my word and Spirit in the way you should go. Not the work which you choose, not the suffering you choose or contrive or desire—that is the road you must take. To that I call you and in that you must be my disciple. If you do that, there is the acceptable time and there your master is come.” || Martin Luther || Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3.1

a reading from the epistles of st. paul

Colossians 1.15-23 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers-all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

 And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him- provided that you continue securely established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel.

easter 3: tuesday evening

Psalm 36

To the leader. Of David, the servant of the Lord.

Transgression speaks to the wicked

   deep in their hearts;

there is no fear of God

   before their eyes.

For they flatter themselves in their own eyes

   that their iniquity cannot be found out and hated.

The words of their mouths are mischief and deceit;

   they have ceased to act wisely and do good.

They plot mischief while on their beds;

   they are set on a way that is not good;

   they do not reject evil.

Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,

   your faithfulness to the clouds.

Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,

   your judgements are like the great deep;

   you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.

How precious is your steadfast love, O God!

   All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

They feast on the abundance of your house,

   and you give them drink from the river of your delights.

For with you is the fountain of life;

   in your light we see light.

O continue your steadfast love to those who know you,

   and your salvation to the upright of heart!

Do not let the foot of the arrogant tread on me,

   or the hand of the wicked drive me away.

There the evildoers lie prostrate;

   they are thrust down, unable to rise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

easter 3: tuesday noon

meditation

Suffering has to be endured in order that it may pass away. Either the world must bear the whole burden and collapse beneath it, or it must fall on Christ to be overcome in him. He therefore suffers vicariously for the world. His is the only suffering which has redemptive efficacy. But the Church knows that the world is still seeking for someone to bear its sufferings, and so, as it follows Christ, suffering becomes the Church’s lot too and bearing it, it is borne up by Christ. As it follows him beneath the cross, the Church stands before God as the representative of the world. || Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Alleluia! Christ is risen.

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3.1

a reading from the epistles of st. paul

Colossians 1.1-14 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

 To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

 In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow-servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

 For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Psalm 25

Of David.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

O my God, in you I trust;

   do not let me be put to shame;

   do not let my enemies exult over me.

Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;

   let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;

   teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth, and teach me,

   for you are the God of my salvation;

   for you I wait all day long.

Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love,

   for they have been from of old.

Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;

   according to your steadfast love remember me,

   for your goodness’ sake, O Lord!

Good and upright is the Lord;

   therefore he instructs sinners in the way.

He leads the humble in what is right,

   and teaches the humble his way.

All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,

   for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

For your name’s sake, O Lord,

   pardon my guilt, for it is great.

Who are they that fear the Lord?

   He will teach them the way that they should choose.

They will abide in prosperity,

   and their children shall possess the land.

The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him,

   and he makes his covenant known to them.

My eyes are ever towards the Lord,

   for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

Turn to me and be gracious to me,

   for I am lonely and afflicted.

Relieve the troubles of my heart,

   and bring me out of my distress.

Consider my affliction and my trouble,

   and forgive all my sins.

Consider how many are my foes,

   and with what violent hatred they hate me.

O guard my life, and deliver me;

   do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.

May integrity and uprightness preserve me,

   for I wait for you.

Redeem Israel, O God,

   out of all its troubles.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

Take a deep breath and allow the Psalm to remain with you for the evening.

easter 3: monday noon

meditation

[Jesus] takes upon himself the suffering of the whole world, and in so doing proves victorious over it. He bears the whole burden of man’s separation from God, and in the very act of drinking the cup he causes it to pass over him. He sets out to overcome the suffering of the world, and so he must drink it to the dregs. Hence while it is still true that suffering means being cut off from God, yet within the fellowship of Christ’s suffering, suffering is overcome by suffering, and becomes the way to communion with God. || Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3.1

a reading from the epistles of st. peter

1 Peter 5.1-14 Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it-not for sordid gain but eagerly. Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for

‘God opposes the proud,

   but gives grace to the humble.’

 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. Discipline yourselves; keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

 Through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, I have written this short letter to encourage you, and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. Your sister church in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings; and so does my son Mark. Greet one another with a kiss of love.

Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

Psalm 149

Praise the Lord!

Sing to the Lord a new song,

   his praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let Israel be glad in its Maker;

   let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.

Let them praise his name with dancing,

   making melody to him with tambourine and lyre.

For the Lord takes pleasure in his people;

   he adorns the humble with victory.

Let the faithful exult in glory;

   let them sing for joy on their couches.

Let the high praises of God be in their throats

   and two-edged swords in their hands,

to execute vengeance on the nations

   and punishment on the peoples,

to bind their kings with fetters

   and their nobles with chains of iron,

to execute on them the judgement decreed.

easter 3: sunday noon

meditation

As Christ bears our burdens, so ought we to bear the burdens of our fellow-men. The law of Christ, which it is our duty to fulfill, is the bearing of the cross. My brother’s burden which I must bear is not only his outward lot, his natural characteristics and gifts, but quite literally his sin. And the only way to bear that sin is by forgiving it in the power of the cross of Christ in which I now share. Thus the call to follow Christ always means a call to share the work of forgiving men their sins. Forgiveness is the Christlike suffering which it is the Christian’s duty to bear. || Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Alleluia! Christ is risen.

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3.1

a reading from the epistles of st. john

1 John 2.7-17 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word that you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says, ‘I am in the light’, while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates another believer is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness.

I am writing to you, little children,

   because your sins are forgiven on account of his name.

I am writing to you, fathers,

   because you know him who is from the beginning.

I am writing to you, young people,

   because you have conquered the evil one.

I write to you, children,

   because you know the Father.

I write to you, fathers,

   because you know him who is from the beginning.

I write to you, young people,

   because you are strong

   and the word of God abides in you,

     and you have overcome the evil one.

 Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world; for all that is in the world-the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches-comes not from the Father but from the world. And the world and its desire are passing away, but those who do the will of God live for ever.

Psalm 110

Of David. A Psalm.

The Lord says to my lord,

   ‘Sit at my right hand

until I make your enemies your footstool.’

The Lord sends out from Zion

   your mighty sceptre.

   Rule in the midst of your foes.

Your people will offer themselves willingly

   on the day you lead your forces

   on the holy mountains.

From the womb of the morning,

   like dew, your youth will come to you.

The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,

   ‘You are a priest for ever according to the order of Melchizedek.’

The Lord is at your right hand;

   he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.

He will execute judgement among the nations,

   filling them with corpses;

he will shatter heads

   over the wide earth.

He will drink from the stream by the path;

   therefore he will lift up his head.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

The cross is laid on every Christian. The first Christ-suffering which every man must experience is the call to abandon the attachments of this world. It is that dying of the old man which is the result of his encounter with Christ. As we embark upon discipleship we surrender ourselves to Christ in union with his death—we give over our lives to death. Thus it begins; the cross is not the terrible end to an otherwise godfearing and happy life, but it meets us at the beginning of our communion with Christ. When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die. || Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

easter 2: saturday morning

Alleluia! Christ is risen.

The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15.57

a reading from the epistles of st. peter

1 Peter 4.7-19 The end of all things is near; therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers. Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, a criminal, or even as a mischief-maker. Yet if any of you suffers as a Christian, do not consider it a disgrace, but glorify God because you bear this name. For the time has come for judgement to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, what will be the end for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And

‘If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,

   what will become of the ungodly and the sinners?’

Therefore, let those suffering in accordance with God’s will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator, while continuing to do good.

Psalm 134

A Song of Ascents.

Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord,

   who stand by night in the house of the Lord!

Lift up your hands to the holy place,

   and bless the Lord.

May the Lord, maker of heaven and earth,

   bless you from Zion.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

Take a deep breath and allow the Psalm to remain with you for the evening.

the prayers

Spend time with God praying in your own words or with no words at all.

Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you all poor and neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

easter 2: friday noon

meditation

To endure the cross is not a tragedy; it is the suffering which is the fruit of an exclusive allegiance to Jesus Christ. When it comes, it is not an accident, but a necessity. It is not the sort of suffering which is inseparable from this mortal life, but the suffering which is an essential part of the specifically Christian life. It is not suffering per se but suffering-and-rejection, and not rejection for any cause or conviction of our own, but rejection for the sake of Christ. || Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Alleluia! Christ is risen.

The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15.57

a reading from the epistles of st. peter

1 Peter 3.13-4.6 Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defence to anyone who demands from you an account of the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight people, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you-not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

  Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same intention (for whoever has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin), so as to live for the rest of your earthly life no longer by human desires but by the will of God. You have already spent enough time in doing what the Gentiles like to do, living in licentiousness, passions, drunkenness, revels, carousing, and lawless idolatry. They are surprised that you no longer join them in the same excesses of dissipation, and so they blaspheme. But they will have to give an account to him who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. For this is the reason the gospel was proclaimed even to the dead, so that, though they had been judged in the flesh as everyone is judged, they might live in the spirit as God does.

easter 2: thursday evening

Psalm 18.25-50

With the loyal you show yourself loyal;

   with the blameless you show yourself blameless;

with the pure you show yourself pure;

   and with the crooked you show yourself perverse.

For you deliver a humble people,

   but the haughty eyes you bring down.

It is you who light my lamp;

   the Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.

By you I can crush a troop,

   and by my God I can leap over a wall.

This God-his way is perfect;

   the promise of the Lord proves true;

   he is a shield for all who take refuge in him.

For who is God except the Lord?

   And who is a rock besides our God?-

the God who girded me with strength,

   and made my way safe.

He made my feet like the feet of a deer,

   and set me secure on the heights.

He trains my hands for war,

   so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

You have given me the shield of your salvation,

   and your right hand has supported me;

   your help has made me great.

You gave me a wide place for my steps under me,

   and my feet did not slip.

I pursued my enemies and overtook them;

   and did not turn back until they were consumed.

I struck them down, so that they were not able to rise;

   they fell under my feet.

For you girded me with strength for the battle;

   you made my assailants sink under me.

You made my enemies turn their backs to me,

   and those who hated me I destroyed.

They cried for help, but there was no one to save them;

   they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.

I beat them fine, like dust before the wind;

   I cast them out like the mire of the streets.

You delivered me from strife with the peoples;

   you made me head of the nations;

   people whom I had not known served me.

As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me;

   foreigners came cringing to me.

Foreigners lost heart,

   and came trembling out of their strongholds.

The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock,

   and exalted be the God of my salvation,

the God who gave me vengeance

   and subdued peoples under me;

who delivered me from my enemies;

   indeed, you exalted me above my adversaries;

   you delivered me from the violent.

For this I will extol you, O Lord, among the nations,

   and sing praises to your name.

Great triumphs he gives to his king,

   and shows steadfast love to his anointed,

   to David and his descendants for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

Take a deep breath and allow the Psalm to remain with you for the evening.

meditation

Self-denial is never just a series of isolated acts of mortification or asceticism. It is not suicide, for there is an element of self-will even in that. To deny oneself is to be aware only of Christ and no more of self, to see only him who goes before and no more the road which is too hard for us. || Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Alleluia! Christ is risen.

The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15.57

a reading from the epistles of st. peter

1 Peter 2.11-25 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul. Conduct yourselves honourably among the Gentiles, so that, though they malign you as evildoers, they may see your honourable deeds and glorify God when he comes to judge.

 For the Lord’s sake accept the authority of every human institution, whether of the emperor as supreme, or of governors, as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing right you should silence the ignorance of the foolish. As servants of God, live as free people, yet do not use your freedom as a pretext for evil. Honour everyone. Love the family of believers. Fear God. Honour the emperor.

 Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle but also those who are harsh. For it is to your credit if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, where is the credit in that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God’s approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps.

‘He committed no sin,

   and no deceit was found in his mouth.’

When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
