If I say, “Surely the darkness will cover me, and the light around me turn to night,” darkness is not dark to you, O Lord; the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike. Psalm 139.10-11

confession of sin

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you in thought word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your name. Amen.

Psalm 22

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

   Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?

O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer;

   and by night, but find no rest.

Yet you are holy,

   enthroned on the praises of Israel.

In you our ancestors trusted;

   they trusted, and you delivered them.

To you they cried, and were saved;

   in you they trusted, and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm, and not human;

   scorned by others, and despised by the people.

All who seek me mock at me;

   they make mouths at me, they shake their heads;

“Commit your cause to the LORD; let him deliver-

   let him rescue the one in whom he delights!”

Yet it was you who took me from the womb;

   you kept me safe on my mother’s breast.

On you I was cast from my birth,

   and since my mother bore me you have been my God.

Do not be far from me,

   for trouble is near

   and there is no one to help.

Many bulls encircle me,

   strong bulls of Bashan surround me;

they open wide their mouths at me,

   like a ravening and roaring lion.

I am poured out like water,

   and all my bones are out of joint;

my heart is like wax;

   it is melted within my breast;

my mouth is dried up like a potsherd,

   and my tongue sticks to my jaws;

   you lay me in the dust of death.

For dogs are all around me;

   a company of evildoers encircles me.

My hands and feet have shriveled;

I can count all my bones.

They stare and gloat over me;

they divide my clothes among themselves,

   and for my clothing they cast lots.

But you, O LORD, do not be far away!

   O my help, come quickly to my aid!

Deliver my soul from the sword,

   my life from the power of the dog!

   Save me from the mouth of the lion!

From the horns of the wild oxen you have rescued me.

I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters;

   in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:

You who fear the LORD, praise him!

   All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him;

   stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!

For he did not despise or abhor

   the affliction of the afflicted;

he did not hide his face from me,

   but heard when I cried to him.

From you comes my praise in the great congregation;

   my vows I will pay before those who fear him.

The poor shall eat and be satisfied;

   those who seek him shall praise the LORD.

   May your hearts live forever!

All the ends of the earth shall remember

For dominion belongs to the LORD,

To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down;

the psalms of the passion

Ad te, Domine, levavi Psalm 25

To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.

O my God, in you I trust;

   do not let me be put to shame;

   do not let my enemies exult over me.

Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;

   let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

Make me to know your ways, O LORD;

   teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth, and teach me,

   for you are the God of my salvation;

   for you I wait all day long.

Be mindful of your mercy, O LORD, and of your steadfast love,

   for they have been from of old.

Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;

   according to your steadfast love remember me,

   for your goodness’ sake, O LORD!

Good and upright is the LORD;

   therefore he instructs sinners in the way.

He leads the humble in what is right,

   and teaches the humble his way.

All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness,

   for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

For your name’s sake, O LORD,

   pardon my guilt, for it is great.

Who are they that fear the LORD?

   He will teach them the way that they should choose.

They will abide in prosperity,

   and their children shall possess the land.

The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him,

   and he makes his covenant known to them.

My eyes are ever toward the LORD,

   for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

Turn to me and be gracious to me,

   for I am lonely and afflicted.

Relieve the troubles of my heart,

   and bring me out of my distress.

Consider my affliction and my trouble,

   and forgive all my sins.

Consider how many are my foes,

   and with what violent hatred they hate me.

O guard my life, and deliver me;

   do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.

May integrity and uprightness preserve me,

   for I wait for you.

Redeem Israel, O God,

   out of all its troubles.

I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” Luke 15:18-19

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us adore him.

a reading from the prophets

Jeremiah 25.8-17 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words, I am going to send for all the tribes of the north, says the Lord, even for King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these nations around; I will utterly destroy them, and make them an object of horror and of hissing, and an everlasting disgrace. And I will banish from them the sound of mirth and the sound of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon for seventy years. Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, says the Lord, making the land an everlasting waste. I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. For many nations and great kings shall make slaves of them also; and I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.

 For thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. They shall drink and stagger and go out of their minds because of the sword that I am sending among them.

 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand, and made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it.

a reading from the gospel

Mark 9.42-50 ‘If any of you put a stumbling-block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell., And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.

 ’For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.’

a reading from the prophets

Jeremiah 24.1-10 The Lord showed me two baskets of figs placed before the temple of the Lord. This was after King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon had taken into exile from Jerusalem King Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim of Judah, together with the officials of Judah, the artisans, and the smiths, and had brought them to Babylon. One basket had very good figs, like first-ripe figs, but the other basket had very bad figs, so bad that they could not be eaten. And the Lord said to me, ‘What do you see, Jeremiah?’ I said, ‘Figs, the good figs very good, and the bad figs very bad, so bad that they cannot be eaten.’

 Then the word of the Lord came to me: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so I will regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans. I will set my eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up, and not tear them down; I will plant them, and not pluck them up. I will give them a heart to know that I am the Lord; and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart.

 But thus says the Lord: Like the bad figs that are so bad they cannot be eaten, so will I treat King Zedekiah of Judah, his officials, the remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and those who live in the land of Egypt. I will make them a horror, an evil thing, to all the kingdoms of the earth-a disgrace, a byword, a taunt, and a curse in all the places where I shall drive them. And I will send sword, famine, and pestilence upon them, until they are utterly destroyed from the land that I gave to them and their ancestors.

a reading from the gospel

Mark 9.30-41 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, ‘The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again.’ But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him.

 Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, ‘What were you arguing about on the way?’ But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, ‘Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.’ Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.’

 John said to him, ‘Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.’ But Jesus said, ‘Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterwards to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.

Hear, O LORD, and be gracious to me!

They keep saying to those who despise the word of the Lord, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to all who stubbornly follow their own stubborn hearts, they say, ‘No calamity shall come upon you.’
For who has stood in the council of the Lord
   so as to see and to hear his word?
   Who has given heed to his word so as to proclaim it?
Look, the storm of the Lord!
   Wrath has gone forth,
a whirling tempest;
   it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
The anger of the Lord will not turn back
   until he has executed and accomplished
   the intents of his mind.
In the latter days you will understand it clearly.
I did not send the prophets,
   yet they ran;
I did not speak to them,
   yet they prophesied.
But if they had stood in my council,
   then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,
and they would have turned them from their evil way,
   and from the evil of their doings.

 Am I a God near by, says the Lord, and not a God far off? Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord. I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ How long? Will the hearts of the prophets ever turn back-those who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart? They plan to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, just as their ancestors forgot my name for Baal. Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let the one who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? says the Lord. Is not my word like fire, says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? See, therefore, I am against the prophets, says the Lord, who steal my words from one another. See, I am against the prophets, says the Lord, who use their own tongues and say, ‘Says the Lord.’ See, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, says the Lord, and who tell them, and who lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or appoint them; so they do not profit this people at all, says the Lord.

a reading from the gospel

John 8.46-59 Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is from God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear them is that you are not from God.’

 The Jews answered him, ‘Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?’ Jesus answered, ‘I do not have a demon; but I honour my Father, and you dishonour me. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and he is the judge. Very truly, I tell you, whoever keeps my word will never see death.’ The Jews said to him, ‘Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets; yet you say, “Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.” Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets also died. Who do you claim to be?’ Jesus answered, ‘If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, he of whom you say, “He is our God”, though you do not know him. But I know him; if I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him and I keep his word. Your ancestor Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day; he saw it and was glad.’ Then the Jews said to him, ‘You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, before Abraham was, I am.’ So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

the prayers

Our Father in heaven,

   hallowed be your Name,

   your kingdom come,

   your will be done,

      on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

   as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial,

   and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

   and the glory are yours,

   now and forever. Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3.20-21

Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who was tempted in every way as we are, yet did not sin. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died for us and rose again, let us go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

Thanks be to God. Amen.

confession of sin

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you in thought word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

that we may delight in your will,

Psalm 22

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

   Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?

O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer;

   and by night, but find no rest.

Yet you are holy,

   enthroned on the praises of Israel.

In you our ancestors trusted;

   they trusted, and you delivered them.

To you they cried, and were saved;

   in you they trusted, and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm, and not human;

   scorned by others, and despised by the people.

All who seek me mock at me;

   they make mouths at me, they shake their heads;

“Commit your cause to the LORD; let him deliver-

   let him rescue the one in whom he delights!”

Yet it was you who took me from the womb;

   you kept me safe on my mother’s breast.

On you I was cast from my birth,

   and since my mother bore me you have been my God.

Do not be far from me,

   for trouble is near

   and there is no one to help.

Many bulls encircle me,

   strong bulls of Bashan surround me;

they open wide their mouths at me,

   like a ravening and roaring lion.

I am poured out like water,

   and all my bones are out of joint;

my heart is like wax;

   it is melted within my breast;

my mouth is dried up like a potsherd,

   and my tongue sticks to my jaws;

   you lay me in the dust of death.

For dogs are all around me;

   a company of evildoers encircles me.

My hands and feet have shriveled;

I can count all my bones.

They stare and gloat over me;

they divide my clothes among themselves,

   and for my clothing they cast lots.

But you, O LORD, do not be far away!

   O my help, come quickly to my aid!

Deliver my soul from the sword,

   my life from the power of the dog!

   Save me from the mouth of the lion!

From the horns of the wild oxen you have rescued me.

I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters;

   in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:

You who fear the LORD, praise him!

   All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him;

   stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!

For he did not despise or abhor

   the affliction of the afflicted;

he did not hide his face from me,

   but heard when I cried to him.

From you comes my praise in the great congregation;

   my vows I will pay before those who fear him.

The poor shall eat and be satisfied;

   those who seek him shall praise the LORD.

   May your hearts live forever!

All the ends of the earth shall remember

   and turn to the LORD;

and all the families of the nations

   shall worship before him.

For dominion belongs to the LORD,

   and he rules over the nations.

To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down;

   before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,

   and I shall live for him.

Posterity will serve him;

   future generations will be told about the Lord,

and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn,

   saying that he has done it.

Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,

   ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

Ascribe to the LORD glory of his name;

The voice of the LORD is over the waters;

The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.

The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;

a reading from the prophets

Jeremiah 23.9-15 Concerning the prophets:

My heart is crushed within me,

   all my bones shake;

I have become like a drunkard,

   like one overcome by wine,

because of the LORD

   and because of his holy words.

For the land is full of adulterers;

   because of the curse the land mourns,

   and the pastures of the wilderness are dried up.

Their course has been evil,

   and their might is not right.

Both prophet and priest are ungodly;

   even in my house I have found their wickedness, says the LORD.

Therefore their way shall be to them

   like slippery paths in the darkness,

   into which they shall be driven and fall;

for I will bring disaster upon them

   in the year of their punishment, says the LORD.

In the prophets of Samaria

   I saw a disgusting them:

they prophesied by Baal

   and led my people Israel astray.

But in the prophets of Jerusalem

   I have seen a more shocking thing:

they commit adultery and walk in lies;

   they strengthen the hands of evildoers,

   so that no one turns from wickedness,

all of them have become like Sodom to me,

   and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.

Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets:

“I am going to make them eat wormwood,

   and give them poisoned water to drink;

for from the prophets of Jerusalem

   ungodliness has spread throughout the land.”

a reading from the gospel

Mark 9.14-29 When they came to the disciples, the saw a great crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them. When the whole crowd saw him, they were immediately overcome with awe, and they ran forward to greet him. He asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” Someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought you my son; he has a spirit that makes him unable to speak; and whenever it seizes him, it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they could not do so.” He answered them, “You faithless generation, how much longer must I be among you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. It has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you are able to do anything, have pity on us and help us.” Jesus said to him, “If you are able!—All things can be done for the one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You spirit that keeps this boy from speaking and hearing, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again!” After crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up and he was able to stand. When he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” He said to them, “This kind can come out only through prayer.”

a reading from the prophets

Jeremiah 23.1-8 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for our evil doings, says the LORD. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD.

   The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The LORD is our righteousness.”

   Therefore, the days are surely coming, says the LORD, when it shall no longer be said, “As the LORD lives who brought the people of Israel up out of the land of Egypt,” but “As the LORD lives who brought out and led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the land of the north and out of all the lands where he had driven them.” Then they shall live in their own land.

a reading from the gospel

Mark 9.2-13 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” And he did not know what to say for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.

   As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead could mean. Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes say the Elijah is indeed coming first?” He said to them, “Elijah is indeed coming first to restore all things. How then is it written about the Son of Man, that he is to go through many sufferings and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written about him.”

Dominus illuminatio Psalm 27

The LORD is my light and my salvation;

   whom shall I fear?

The LORD is the stronghold of my life;

   of whom shall I be afraid?

When evildoers assail me

   to devour my flesh-

my adversaries and foes-

   they shall stumble and fall.

Though an army encamp against me,

   my heart shall not fear;

though war rise up against me,

   yet I will be confident.

One thing I asked of the LORD,

   that will I seek after:

to live in the house of the LORD

   all the days of my life,

to behold the beauty of the LORD,

   and to inquire in his temple.

For he will hide me in his shelter

   in the day of trouble;

he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;

   he will set me high on a rock.

Now my head is lifted up

   above my enemies all around me,

and I will offer in his tent

   sacrifices with shouts of joy;

I will sing and make melody to the LORD.

Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud,

   be gracious to me and answer me!

“Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!”

   Your face, LORD, do I seek.

   Do not hide your face from me.

Do not turn your servant away in anger,

   you who have been my help.

Do not cast me off, do not forsake me,

   O God of my salvation!

If my father and mother forsake me,

   the LORD will take me up.

Teach me your way, O LORD,

   and lead me on a level path

   because of my enemies.

Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries,

   for false witnesses have risen against me,

   and they are breathing out violence.

I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD

   in the land of the living.

Wait for the LORD;

   be strong, and let your heart take courage;

   wait for the LORD!

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1.8-9

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us adore him.

a reading from the prophets

Jeremiah 22.13-23 Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness,

   and his upper rooms by injustice;

who makes his neighbors work for nothing,

   and does not give them their wages;

who says, “I will build myself a spacious house

   with large upper rooms,”

and who cuts out windows for it,

   paneling it with cedar,

   and painting it with vermilion.

Are you a king

   because you compete in cedar?

Did not your father eat and drink

   and do justice and righteousness?

   Then it was well with him.

He judged the cause of the poor and needy;

   then it was well.

Is not this to know me?

   says the LORD.

but your eyes and heart

   are only on your dishonest gain,

for shedding innocent blood,

   and for practicing oppression and violence.

Therefore thus says the LORD concerning King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah:

They shall not lament for him, saying,

   “Alas, my brother!” or “Alas, sister!”

They shall not lament for him, saying,

   “Alas, lord!” or “Alas, his majesty!”

With the burial of donkey he shall be buried—

   dragged off and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

Go up to Lebanon, and cry out,

   and lift up your voice in Bashan;

cry out from Abarim,

   for all your lovers are crushed.

I spoke to you in your prosperity,

   but you said, “I will not listen.”

This has been your way from your youth,

   for you have not obeyed my voice.

The wind shall shepherd all your shepherds,

   and your lovers shall go into captivity;

then you will be ashamed and dismayed

   because of all your wickedness.

O inhabitant of Lebanon,

   nested among the cedars,

how you will groan when pangs come upon you,

   pain as of a woman in labor!

a reading from the gospel

Mark 8.27-9.1 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.

   Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”

   He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.”

To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, because we have rebelled against him and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by following his laws which he set before us. Daniel 9:9-10

a reading from the prophets

Jeremiah 18.1-11 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: “Come, go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemed good to him.

   Then the word of the LORD came to me: Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the LORD. Just like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. At one moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, but if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will change my mind about the disaster that I intended to bring on it. And at another moment I amy declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, but if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will change my mind about the good that I had intended to do to it. Now, therefore, say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD: Look, I am a potter shaping evil against you and devising a plan against you. Turn now, all of you from your evil way, and amen your ways and your doings.

a reading from the gospel

Mark 8.11-26 The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.” And he left them, and getting into the boat again, he went across to the other side.

   Now the disciples had forgotten to bring any bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out—beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.” They said to one another, “It is because we have no bread.” And becoming aware of it, Jesus said to them, “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes, and fail to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?” And they said to him, “Seven.” Then he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”

   They came to Bethsaida. some people brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village; and when he had put saliva on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Can you see anything?” And the man looked up and said, “I can see people, but they look like trees, walking.” Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he looked intently and his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Then he sent him away to his home, saying, “Do not even go into the village.”

Jeremiah 17.19-27 Thus said the LORD to me: Go and stand in the People’s Gate, by which the kings of Judah enter and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem, and say to them: Hear the word of the LORD, you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who enter by these gates. Thus says the LORD: For the sake of your lives, take care that you do not bear a burden on the sabbath day or bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem. And do not carry a burden out of your houses on the sabbath or do any work, but keep the sabbath day holy, as I commanded your ancestors. Yet they did not listen or incline their ear; they stiffened their necks and would not hear or receive instruction.

   But if you listen to me, says the LORD, and bring in no burden by the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but keep the sabbath day holy and do no work on it, then there shall enter by the gates of this city kings who sit on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their officials, the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall be inhabited forever. And people shall come from the towns of Judah and the places around Jerusalem, form the land of Benjamin, from the Shephelah, from the hill country, and from the Negeb, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and frankincense, and bringing thank offerings to the house of the LORD. But if you do not listen to me, to keep the sabbath day holy, and to carry in no burden through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates; it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem and shall not be quenched.

Mark 8.1-10 In those days when there was again a great crowd without anything to eat, he called his disciples and said to them, “I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way—and some of them have come from a great distance.” His disciples replied, “How can one feed these people with bread here in the desert?” He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” Then he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute; and also a few small fish; and after blessing them, he ordered that these too should be distributed. They ate and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. Now there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

Forgive us our sins

   as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial,

   and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

   and the glory are yours,

   now and forever. Amen.

Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

blessing

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13.14

Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who was tempted in every way as we are, yet did not sin. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died for us and rose again, let us go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
